At around 2 am, I heard Slow Motion (by Third Eye Blind not whatever rapper sings it) blasting through my phone. I looked at the time and I had no idea who the hell would be calling me at this time. Then I looked at my phone, Sidney.
“Hey.” I said half asleep. It was really loud wherever he was.
“Hey Baby!” He said yelling a little. I could hear people in the background, I am assuming his friends.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling you! I love you and I miss you..” Then he just start to ramble on. I heard something about Ben in there and then I heard something about Brittany.
“Whats Brittany have to do with anything?” I said getting kind of mad that even if he was drunk, that he would bring her up.
“She was a good time.” He said in all seriousness.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
“What? I’m drunk!” He said like that was an excuse.
“Yeah, I can tell!” I said not being amused. Then I heard people in the background and some girl say who is he talking too!
“Its okay, its just my girlfriend.” Sidney replied.
“Yeah.. just his girlfriend.” I said.
“Baby..” He started to say.
“Have a good night, Sid.” I said.
“Love you!” He yelled. I’m not really sure why he was yelling, I never understood why when people were drunk they always got so much louder.
“Oh yeah, it seems like it.” I said and then I hung up.
After that phone call, I didn’t sleep much. I just pissed off. Why would he call me drunk? I don’t do drunk phone calls with him.. ever. He knows not to call me drunk, because he is a different person when he is really drunk. Its not that bad when you are with him because you see him gradually get drunk, but when he just calls you its just overwhelming because sober Sidney is nothing like drunk Sidney.
“So I got a drunk phone call last night.” I said to Ben the next day while were in the pool.
“From who?” Ben asked.
“Sidney.”
“Oh gosh.” He said.
“Yeah.. you don’t even understand.”
“Didn’t you say that you never drink with Sidney?”
“Yeah, I hardly ever drink and Sidney doesn’t drink like a ton, but he drinks. But I have only been with Sidney while he was drunk like a handful of times. And atleast twice we got into a fight about it.”
“So did you fight last night?”
“We didn’t really fight. I heard this girl in the background and then he said something about Brittany and said she was a good time.”
“Who is Brittany?”
“The girl he dated, or should I say slept with, after he told me he needed to concentrate on hockey.”
“He was drunk, so it doesn’t really mean anything.”
“Yeah, but it still is annoying.”
“Just don’t think about it.”
“Kind of hard not to think about it, there is nothing much else to do.” I said.
“We should go out tonight.”
“What?” I said.
“They are playing The Notebook at the old theatre, we should go.” He said.
“The Notebook?”
“What? All girls love that movie, plus it will make you love Sidney more because that’s what love stories do.” He said laughing.
“I don’t really like The Notebook, but I’ll go. You are right, thinking about Sidney doesn’t help much.”
“I’m always right.” He said splashing me.
“Okay, actually I am always right. You will learn.” I said getting out of the pool. “I’m going to go get Ice Tea.” I said.
“Hello.” Ben said answering my phone.
“Hello? Can I talk to Joey?” Sidney said.
“She is in the house getting Ice Tea.”
“Oh who is this?” Sidney asked.
“Ben. I’ll tell her to call you.”
“No that’s okay.” Sidney said and hung up.
“Hey, Sidney just called.” Ben said as soon as I got out there.
“What did he say?”
“He just wanted to talk to you.”
“This is going to be a great conversation.” I said smiling.
“I’ll come by at like 7 we can go get food before the movie?” Ben asked.
“Yeah.. this is totally platonic though, right?” I said.
“Totally. I don’t really want to get on the bad side of Sidney Crosby. He could probably hire someone to come take me out.” Ben said laughing.
“He’s not like that. He is just protective, but its fine. I’ll see you tonight!” I said and Ben left. I grabbed my phone and took my ice tea and walked into the house.
“Hey.” I said calling him.
“Hey.” He said.
“You sound really good.” I said.
“Where is Ben?” He said.
“Are you serious right now? Lets not even talk about the fact that you called me at 2 am completely wasted.”
“I was drunk.”
“No shit, Sidney. You were drunk, but why did you call me? Why did you have to call me and make it known that you were drunk with girls? And then you have the nerve to tell me that Brittany was a good time?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Yeah, you did. Cause that’s what every girl wants to hear.” I said.
“Jo, I don’t want to fight and I don’t remember the call at all. I remember talking to you but I don’t remember anything I said.”
“Don’t drink so much then.”
“I’m leaving in like two days.”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t really help me because I’m still here and you will be in Canada.”
“you are acting like I don’t love you or that I don’t miss you.”
“I’m not acting like that. I know you love me and I know you miss me, but that doesn’t make it easier to think about you and drunk girls that just can’t wait to get with Sidney Crosby.” I said.
“First of all, it doesn’t matter what drunk girls want, because Sidney Crosby doesn’t want to be with those girls.”
“Don’t refer to yourself in the third person.” I said.
“You know what I mean. And Jo, it comes down to trust. I love you and I wouldn’t hurt you like that. And you are with Ben.”
“I’m not drunk with Ben. Things happen when alcohol is involved.”
“Things won’t happen between me and any other girl.”
“Sidney.” I said sighing.
“What?”
“I know that things won’t happen, but after you called last night I couldn’t shake that feeling. I didn’t sleep after that.”
“I’m sorry baby. You know I’m a stupid drunk.”
“I know and that’s what scares me. The sober Sidney would never hurt me, but the drunk Sidney who knows?”
“I wouldn’t hurt you even if I was drunk. You are way too important for me to just fuck it up like that.”
“I just miss you.” I said.
“Me too.”
“This just sucks.” I whispered.
“I know, it will get better though.”
“I don’t know how. We have no plans on seeing each other in the near future.”
“Just know that I love you.”
“I know that.” I said.
“Just don’t fall for Ben, promise me.”
“I won’t fall for Ben. I go for hockey players.. its my curse.” I said laughing.
“I’m serious, Jo.”
“Me too. You have nothing to worry about with Ben.”
“Okay.”
“How about you stay away from girls while you are drunk? Or atleast don’t call me while you are drunk.” I said.
“I won’t call you like that again, I’m sorry.”
“I forgive you.”
“Okay, we are going out on a boat or something. Who knows. I’ll call you later.” He said.
“Sounds good. Love you.”
“Love you too, babe.” He said.
